Say "No" to Smoking at Work
If you smoke... you know what non-smoking co-workers are saying. "Why do they get so many breaks?" "All I smell is smoke when they walk by." It goes on and on.
Attitudes toward smoking, (more accurately towards smokers) have changed significantly over the past decade. The workplace is no exception.
Unfortunately for smokers, there can be significant consequences in the new smoke-free workplace.
Here are some areas where smokers are exposed to potential criticism:
- Interviewing: Non-Smoking managers are sensitive to the smell of smoke. If you want to make a good first impression, don't light up before your interview. In fact, you may want to consider fresh clothing.
- Cigarette Breaks: Your craving for a cigarette does not entitle you to work breaks that are more frequent than what is standard for ALL employees. Too many breaks will draw criticism.
- The Smell: Irritating to some and down right offensive to others, lasting odors from cigarette smoke may become a problem if you work in tight quarters or poorly ventilated workspace.
- Your Image: Do you really want co-workers and your boss to see you hovered out in the cold around an ash tray in the middle of winter?
- A Sign of Weakness: Like it or not, the perception of many non-smokers is that smokers are weak in character or else they would have already quit.
- The Ex-Smoker: Watch Out! The smoker has no enemy more intent to raise issue about your smoking than the ex-smoker. Know who they are!
Advice: Keep your smoking to yourself!
Quit... Try to quit... at a minimum cut down your smoking at work.
Many nicotine replacement products offer proven help. Additionally, Zyban, a prescription medication has also proven effective to assist quitters.
Not interested in quitting? Many people have learned that the use of nicotine replacement products can help them reduce cravings and lower their "need" during time at work.
Ultimately, YOU not anyone else, will determine the true "cost" of your smoking.
