Depression: Creating Distance in Relationships
from The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Do you know that many symptoms of clinical depression can be confused with a partner's "lack of interest" or seemingly "unmotivated" behavior?
Symptoms of Depression
- Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
- Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
- Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
- Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
- Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
- Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
- Restlessness, irritability
- Excessive crying
- Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
If a person has five or more of these symptoms for more than two weeks, or the symptoms interfere with work or family, then he or she should obtain a thorough evaluation from a trained medical or mental health professional. This includes a complete physical and a review of family history of illness.
