If you wait until an employee leaves the company to begin searching for a replacement, you have made a "rookie" mistake! Unfortunately for you and your company, this mistake will result in lost productivity from an empty position, put pressure on remaining employees to "fill-in" and most likely result in a hurried hiring process.

Too many managers under the gun to fill a position will make lasting mistakes:

  • Interview less people if in a rush
  • Hire "best available" person at the time
  • Make hiring decision based on person's start date

Why Perpetual Recruiting?

  • A two week notice is NEVER enough time to find a quality employee
  • Employees WILL quit! Even your best, loyal people... so expect it!
  • If you find a great potential hire... your mediocre team member should be replaced.
  • Eliminate expensive counter offers: Many companies will feel the need to entice an employee to stay with more money, promotions, stock and other incentives. Effective recruiting makes everyone replaceable.

Tips on Perpetual Recruiting

  • Always have an ad on Monster.com. This will provide an inexpensive flow of resume's
  • Commit yourself to interview at least one person a week (more if possible!)
  • IMPORTANT: Be open with your employees about this process. They should know that their jobs are NOT in jeopardy, but that it is in the company's best interest to continue to look for great people. This will also help to motivate your team. Fear of losing a job to a more qualified person will improve productivity.
  • Interviewing provides market intelligence. Managers should gain useful information about market conditions and competitors through the perspective of candidates.
  • Use references to source other candidates. Asking for references is a normal part of any interview process. Use these calls to "recruit" potential employees.
  • Always ask for referrals. Interviewing is an amazing networking opportunity! See it that way and you will strengthen your network!
