I've Got To Find A Job Soon And I'm An Older Worker!

By Marilyn J. Tellez, M.A.

Question: What do I do first? I don't know where to start and I'm afraid no one will hire me.

Answer: Forget the age thing. You are just like anyone starting out on this adventure. First, use the 7 stories exercise. Write down 7 accomplishments from any time of your life, big or small.

Question: But what do I do with this information?

Answer: Look for clues about yourself, (usually verbs), about what you've done and felt good about.

Question: Well, I've got lots of verbs about myself, but how can this help me?

Answer: This is your SKILLS list about what you can do, did and felt good about.

Question: Ok, I understand this is about what I can do, but now what?

Answer: Ask your friends and family about how this list of accomplishments/verbs fits you and what job titles come to mind. Call and visit employers to ask about what jobs they have had that fit your skills. (Informational interviewing, not job searching).

Question: I did do that with a few employers, but I'm still scared. I need help.

Answer: Ok, network with friends and family and ask them for more places to get information. Be active and get information from anyone you may meet. Go back to those potential employers, even if you contacted just a few, and submit a proposal to them about WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THEM.

Question: I'm tired and stuck. Help!

Answer: Repeat the process until you get more employer names on your list. Review your skills. See a career counselor if you feel you need one. DON'T GIVE UP and BE PERSISTENT. Get the job, no matter the age! Celebrate!
